Police station attacked in Nigeria's Kano

Aljazeera-City was the scene of the deadliest attack by the Islamist Boko Haram, in which 186 people were killed last month.Gunmen have attacked a police station with explosives and automatic weapons in Kano, Nigeria's second most populated city.A senior police officer said on Monday that the police station in Kano's Sharada neighbourhood had been burned down by attackers armed with explosives, who also shot one officer in the leg."The gunmen came from different directions to attack the Sharada industrial estate police station with bombs and gun shot some minutes after 6pm," Kano police spokesman Magaji Musa Majia'a told the Reuters news agency by telephone.

Abbas to head Palestinian unity government

Aljazeera-Hamas endorses proposal in which Palestinian president will assume PM role in interim body to prepare for upcoming poll.Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority (PA), has agreed to lead an interim national consensus government to prepare for upcoming elections, under an agreement signed in the Qatari capital.The "Doha Declaration" was signed in the Gulf state on Monday by Abbas and Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal in the presence of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar's emir.

Lavrov Tells Assad to Ensure Peace

RiaNovosti-Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told President al-Assad of Syria he had to do what it takes to ensure peace in the country, during talks in Damascus on Tuesday.“Every leader in every country should understand their responsibility. You understand yours,” Lavrov told Assad, adding "it's in our interests that the Arab peoples live in peace and harmony."Lavrov’s visit comes three days after Russia and China vetoed a UN Security Council resolution condemning the violent crackdown in Syria.He arrived along with his Foreign Intelligence Service chief Mikhail Fradkov.

Burundi celebrates 21st anniversary of the Unity Charter

RFI-Burundi celebrated the 21st anniversary of the adoption of its Unity Charter on Monday. While the man behind the project, former president Pierre Buyoya, says he is satisfied with the watershed document, some say there are reasons to doubt its efficiency after ten years of civil war.The 21st anniversary of the signing of the unity charter was celebrated across the country and, as in previous years, few ordinary citizens attended the many functions.The unity charter was adopted in a referendum in 1991. The document allowed Burundians  to break with the ethnic divisions of the past.

French airport strike begins to bite with only half of Air France flights confirmed

By RFI:The strike in France by airline pilots, flight attendants and ground staff has entered its second day with significant disruptions to Air France long-haul flights and signs the industrial action is gaining speed.On Tuesday morning nine Air France long-haul flights were cancelled over a three hour period compared with just four on Monday.The pattern was repeated elsewhere in France with cancelled flights at Paris’ Orly and Nantes airports. Air France says it can only guaranteed 50 per cent of long-haul and 70 per cent of short-haul flights on Tuesday.

Clashes in Kuwait before parliamentary vote

Aljazeera-Tribesmen clash with riot police after storming TV channel in second day of unrest before Thursday's elections.More than 20 people were wounded when Kuwaiti riot police clashed with tribesmen who stormed a local television station in a second day of violence before parliamentary elections, witnesses said.The incident took place late on Tuesday at the offices of the privately-owned Al-Watan satellite channel which was hosting Nabeel al-Fadl, a pro-government candidate in Thursday's vote to determine Kuwait's 50-seat parliament.Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd that started throwing stones, wounding around 20 security men and four reporters, a witness told AFP.

AFCON 2012: Gabon maintains group c lead

AfricaNews-Inspirational Gabonese striker, Patrick-Emerick Aubameyang, donning jersey number 9, once more put his country's flag and image on the international spotlight. In Gabon's last Group C match, played Tuesday, at Stade de Franceville, Aubameyang gave Gabon the lead after 62 minutes when he collected a loose ball before wrong footing Tunisia goalkeeper, Rami Jeridi for his third goal of the competition.    Co-hosts Gabon defeated Tunisia 1-0 to finish top of AFCON Group C with a perfect nine points from three matches. The Panthers will play the runners-up in Group D in Libreville on Sunday, while Tunisia, who finished second in the group will face the winners of Group D.

Senegal in turmoil as protest intensifies

Africanews-Hundreds of anti-government protesters Tuesday gathered in the central Dakar, Senegal to show their dissatisfaction over the incumbent president Abdoulaye Wade's candidacy after two civilians were killed by paramilitary police in a similar demonstration in Podor situated in the northern part of the country.The angry demonstrator gathered, holding up signs and chanting slogans in Place de l'Obelisque, a large square in downtown Dakar.The demonstrators are protesting against the ruling by the country's top legal body which validated President Abdoulaye Wade's candidacy in next month's election for the second time since verdict was delivered.The embattle president; his supporter and the court argued that the new law is not retroactive. Since it took effect after Wade was first elected in 2000, the court said it did not apply to him.

WikiLeaks founder fights extradition

Aljazeera-Julian Assange heads to UK court in bid to block his extradition to Sweden, where he faces allegations of sex crimes.WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange appealed to Britain's Supreme Court on Wednesday not to extradite him to Sweden over accusations of sex crimes, a move that could push his anti-secrecy website further towards oblivion. The Australian-born Assange is expected to head to court on Wednesday for an expected two-day hearing on whether he should be sent back to Sweden to face the accusations.He was detained in Britain in December 2010 on a European arrest warrant issued by a Swedish prosecutor after two female former WikiLeaks volunteers accused him of sexual assault.His lawyers have argued that the warrant is invalid because it was issued by a prosecutor rather than a neutral judge or court.
