Pakistan - corruption amnesty fallout Travel ban for Pakistani Defence Minister

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Pakistan's Interior Minister, Rehman Malik, while Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhta is barred from leaving the country. This is the first fallout after the Supreme Court removed an amnesty protecting politicians from corruption charges.

Cambodia - UN war crimes tribunal Former Khmer Rouge head charged with genocide

Cambodia's UN-backed war crimes court on Friday charged Khmer Rouge former head of state Khieu Samphan with genocide over the regime's slaughter of Vietnamese people and ethnic Cham Muslims. The 78-year-old was already charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Climate Change Conference - Namibia interview Cross-border conservation in southern Africa

African nations have demanded commitment on reductions in global warming and help to poorer countries at the UN's Climate Change Conference. With the continent facing the worst effects of climate change, a Namibian official says the question is vital for his country.Conservation is one of Namibia's "fundamental laws", says Teofilus Nghitila, the head of Environmental Affairs at Namibia's Ministry of Environment and Tourism.

Opposition calls on Zardari to quit

Pakistan's main opposition party has called for Asif Ali Zardari, the country's president, to resign after the supreme court declared void an amnesty deal protecting him from corruption charges.Following the ruling, officials from the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) said Zardari should be obliged to step down.

U.S. Congress moves against Iran amid nuclear row

Tehran tests upgraded long-range missile
UNITED States House of Representatives has overwhelmingly approved new sanctions against Iran aimed at halting its disputed nuclear programme. The measure, according to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), empowers President Barack Obama to ban foreign firms that supply Iran with refined petroleum from doing business in the U.S. The bill, which was passed by 412-12, can only become law if approved by the Senate.

Diakite admits shooting Guinean junta leader

THE soldier accused over the assassination attempt on Captain Moussa Dadis Camara has admitted shooting the Guinean junta leader, telling French media he felt "betrayed" by his former boss.The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and Associated Press (AP) quoted Lt Toumba Diakite as telling Radio France Internationale (RFI) radio that the military rulers intended to blame him for a massacre of opposition protesters on September28, adding that he shot Capt. Camara in the neck to avoid being arrested.

Mexico - drug wars Top drugs baron killed in Mexico

(RFI)One of Mexico’s top drugs barons has been killed along with four other cartel members in a shoot-out with Mexican soldiers. In a separate incident the heads of six police officers have been discovered in the north of the country.The Naval Ministry said in a statement that Arturo Beltran Leyva, the so-called godfather of the Beltran Leyva brothers cartel, was killed "during an intense battle between presumed members of his organisation and military personnel from the Marine infantry in Cuernavaca, close to Mexico City”.

Italy - Berlusconi Berlusconi leaves hospital

(RFI)Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has left hospital, four days after Sunday's attack in central Milan when he suffered serious facial injuries. He left the hospital on Thursday morning with bandages on his nose and cheek.Berlusconi was brought to hospital after being assaulted by a man who hit him with a miniature replica of Milan's cathedral on Sunday.

France/Pakistan - Karachi bombing Sarkozy accused of corruption in Karachi bomb scandal

A lawyer acting for the families of French naval construction workers killed in a bomb attack in the Pakistani city of Karachi has accused French President Nicolas Sarkozy of being "at the heart of the corruption" which allegedly led to the blast.Sarkozy was Minister of the Budget during the period leading up to the attack, which claimed 14 lives. Lawyer Olivier Morice says that means that he was "perfectly aware" that "exorbitant commissions" were being paid to Pakistani officials.
