 VOA News-U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Friday visited U.S. troops in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar, the spiritual homeland of the Taliban and the center of the latest U.S. efforts to oust Islamic militants.Gates met with about 100 soldiers at a U.S. military base near Kandahar City, saying their success in the area will make a difference to NATO's campaign to secure the region. He offered condolences to the troops for the recent loss of eight comrades in insurgent attacks and warned there will be more tough days ahead.

 By RFI:Twenty-five gang members have been killed in a clash with the army at a ranch near Mexico’s northern city of Monterrey.Two soldiers were wounded and three people the gang had kidnapped were set free in the action near Ciudad Mier, on the US border, said the regional military command.Officials say the clash happened Thursday as soldiers were on patrol in the town of General Trevino, in Nuevo Leon state, which has seen an increase in drug-related violence.

 By RFI:Philippine authorities have acknowledged errors leading to the deaths of eight hostages and are considering compensation for the victims and their families. Hong Kong police are also studying bullets over suspicions the tourists may have been killed by the police during the operation.Phillipine President Benigno Aquino formed a cabinet-level committee to look into possible compensation for the victims.Budget Secretary Florencio Abad, a member of the committee, expressed sympathy to the victims but would not be drawn on an amount nor a timetable for any possible compensation.

So he is considered the front-runner in this month's runoff, especially as he has expanded his political coalition to include former rivals.But in campaigning for the September 19 election, Diallo says some local government officials are unfairly favoring his opponent, Alpha Conde, who won just over one-quarter of the first-round votes.

British and Pakistani investigators are looking into three Pakistan cricket team players who are suspected of involvement in the scheme.
