Morocco: 11 Spanish demonstrators arrested

AfricaNews-Moroccan police have arrested 11 Spanish activists in Aaiun at the Western Sahara who were wielding flags for independence for the disputed territory, the Spanish Foreign Ministry has said.The 11 activists were the only demonstrators when they were arrested in Aaiun.Narrating their ordeal to Spanish national radio, one of the activists from Saharacciones, Alexis Dorta said they suffered physical abuse at the hands of Moroccan authorities and published pictures of bruised skin and black eyes on a website in favour of an independent Western Sahara.

Karzai Attacks Afghan War Strategy as 'Ineffective'

VOANews-Afghan President Hamid Karzai has again harshly criticized coalition strategy for fighting Afghanistan's stubborn insurgency.President Karzai said in a meeting Sunday with the visiting German Parliament speaker Norbert Lammer the current strategy has been "ineffective" and has not achieved anything other than "killing civilians."Mr. Karzai also said rethinking counter-insurgency strategies in Afghanistan is the war-torn country's most pressing need.

Obama Calls New Orleans a 'Symbol of Resilience' on Katrina Anniversary

VOA News-The southern U.S. state of Louisiana on Sunday observed the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the city of New Orleans, killed more than 1,800 people in the region and caused some $125 billion in damage.  President Barack Obama visited New Orleans to pay tribute to its reconstruction - an effort that continues today. Hurricane Katrina subjected Louisiana to punishing winds and catastrophic flooding, and exposed the limits of the U.S. government to respond to a major disaster.  For weeks after the storm, the world saw heartbreaking images of people stranded without food or shelter, and a federal response that was roundly criticized as slow, chaotic and inadequate.

Somalia: Ethiopia Troops in Country to Battle Radicals

Gaddafi on friendship visit to Rome

Aljazeera-Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has arrived in Italy  for a two-day visit that has aroused a controversy over Tripoli's growing influence on the Italian economy.Gaddafi's visit, aimed at celebrating the second anniversary of the 2008 Italian-Libyan friendship agreement, began on Sunday, and is his fourth since a 2008 agreement under which Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian prime minister, agreed to pay $5bn in reparations for damage inflicted during Italy's colonial rule over Libya in the early part of the 20th century.

Arrest in Pakistan 'betting scam': Reports say members of cricket team were involved in cheating during UK Test match.

Aljazeera-British police say they have arrested a man on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud bookmakers following reports of match-fixing in a cricket match between England and Pakistan.Police questioned members of the Pakistani team late on Saturday over allegations by the News of the World newspaper that some members of the team were involved in cheating in the fourth and final test at Lord's before the final day on Sunday.

Israel PM says he did not tell the US he would freeze settlements

By RFI:Ahead of the resumption of Middle East peace talks in Washington on Thursday Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday he never told the US administration a settlement freeze would be renewed, according to an official.“The future of settlements would be taken up with other questions in discussions on a final accord,” Netanyahu said, according to a Likud party official cited by the AFP news agency. “We have not presented any proposal to the Americans on an extension of the freeze.”

Indonesian volcano erupts a second time

By RFI:Indonesia's Mount Sinabung volcano, on the island of Sumatra, erupted for a second time on Monday polluting the sky with thick grey smoke. Flights were disrupted and thousands of people fled for temporary shelters."It erupted again at 06:30 (00:30 CET) and lasted about 15 minutes. The smoke and ash reached at least 2,000 metres," government volcanologist Agus Budianto said.
