 Thirty-three trapped miners in Chile have started receiving food, water and other supplies intended to help them survive as they face a wait of up to four months before they are rescued.Rescue workers started sending the supplies Monday through a narrow drill hole. The miners are also expected to receive medication and communication devices.The 33 miners were found alive Sunday after being trapped for more than two weeks in a mine near the northern city of Copiapo.

 VOA News-The U.S. military says it now has fewer than 50,000 troops in Iraq, as it closes in on an official end to combat operations.In a statement Tuesday, the military said it had completed the drawdown ahead of an August 31 deadline set by President Barack Obama.U.S. forces will shift to training Iraqi security forces, performing counter-terrorism operations and supporting organizations working to rebuild Iraq.

 An outbreak of cholera in the three neighbouring West African countries of Cameroon, Nigeria and Niger has infected nearly 4,000 people and killed more than 260 others since May, the United Nations health agency reported today, blaming the epidemic on poor hygiene and inadequate access to clean water.Northern Cameroon, where more than 2,800 cases - including more than 200 deaths - have been reported, is the worst affected area in the Lake Chad Basin, according to the UN World Health Organization (WHO).

 UN News-A United Nations human rights team has confirmed that members of two armed groups in the volatile east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) raped more than 150 women during an attack on a village in North Kivu province last month, a UN spokesperson said on Monday.Victims of the attack, which occurred on 30 July in the village of Bunangiri, which situated in the Banamukira area of North Kivu, are receiving medical treatment and have also been provided psycho-social care, the spokesperson of the Secretary-General told reporters in New York.
