Bodies of 4 American Aid Workers Headed Home from Afghanistan

VOA News-The bodies of four American aid workers killed in northern Afghanistan are headed to the United States.Ten members of an International Assistance Mission medical team, eight foreigners and two Afghans, were shot and killed in Badakhshan province last week. A spokeswoman for the U.S. embassy in Afghanistan, Caitlin Hayden, said Wednesday that the remains of four of the slain U.S. citizens have begun the journey home to their families.  The bodies of two other Americans will be buried in Afghanistan, in accordance with their families' wishes.The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation is probing the killings, which have been condemned by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

America.gov (Washington, DC) — President Obama told young African leaders at the start of a three-day conference that as they work to build strong economies with jobs and opportunity, the United States will work with them, promoting the trade and investment on which growth depends."No one should have to pay a bribe to get a job or get government to provide basic services," Obama told delegates to the first President's Forum with Young African Leaders, which is meeting in Washington August 3-5. "As part of our new development strategy, we're emphasizing transparency, accountability and a strong civil society -- the kinds of reform that can help unleash transformational change."

Violence rages in south Kyrgyzstan

Aljazeera-Sporadic gunfire has continued throughout the night in southern Kyrgyzstan following three days of unrest between ethnic Uzbeks and Kyrgyz in which at least 117 people have been killed.Fires set by rioters burned across the southern city of Osh on Monday as tens of thousands of ethnic Uzbeks fled the spiralling violence.At least 1,400 people have been injured in the fighting, according to the country's interim government, which has struggled to stem the nation's worst ethnic violence since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Turkey calls on Israel to accept probe into raid

AP-ISTANBUL – Turkey's foreign minister on Monday called on Israel to accept an international probe into the raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla that killed nine Turks.Ahmet Davutoglu said Israel should declare it agrees to the probe proposed by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. He said: "Otherwise, it means that they have something to hide."

Israel Rejects UN Proposal for Gaza Probe

VOA News-Israel has rejected a proposal from United Nations Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon to establish a multinational commission to investigate a deadly Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound aid ship.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told cabinet ministers Sunday that he had informed Mr. Ban of his decision.  He said he told the U.N. chief an investigation of facts needed to be carried out "responsibly and objectively."

Afghan jirga calls for peace programme with Taliban

RFI-Delegates at a landmark conference in Kabul are calling for a peace programme to open talks with the Taliban. About 1,600 delegates, representing Afghans across the political and social spectrum, attended the so-called peace jirga, which finished on Friday.The Taliban did not take part; saying peace discussions can start only after all foreign forces leave the country.Delegates also called for the release of Afghans held without charge in military detention centres.

Africa losing billions in clean energy deals

CAPE TOWN (Reuters) - Africa stood to loose billions of dollars because a lack of economic incentives and inadequate regulatory regimes made the continent unattractive for wind power companies, a top industry official said on Thursday.Eduardo Gonzalez, Spain's representative to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), said the world's poorest continent fares worst among other regions when it came to wind power generation.
